On Thursday evening, I took a brisk walk from work over the river and down to the Elephant & Castle for the first parliamentary selection meeting I’ve been to. The subject of the meeting was the re-adoption (or otherwise) of Simon Hughes MP as the prospective parliamentary candidate for the area.
Simon was on good form, speaking first and then answering questions. In the end, the vote was for reselection with no votes against – so despite it being a secret ballot, you can pretty much work out how I voted.
It was also the first party event I’ve been to in Southwark. Went along to the pub afterwards and had a pleasant evening with a group of local councillors and activists, who were all very friendly. Looking forward to Bermondsey and Old Southwark Liberal Drinks in a couple of weeks.
I read on Jonathan Calder’s blog the sad news that Julian Cummins has died suddenly at just 52. I knew Julian from Yorkshire and the Humber regional party conferences and from the Leeds Liberal Democrats, where he was a keen activist and a former councillor. He was always friendly, encouraging and keen to get younger members of the party involved in its activities.

Steve Webb, the Lib Dem MP for Northavon, has a track record of being down with new-fangled interweb technologies, which led to him winning the Hansard Society’s E-Democracy Award a couple of years ago. It should be little surprise then that he has become the latest of the party’s MPs to take up blogging, with his puntastic new site The Webb log. Welcome to the blogosphere.
Perhaps as a result of various New Year’s resolution, Steve takes the total number of active blog on Lib Dem Blogs to 111;, if we were mentioning cricket, which we’re not, it would be time for a superstitious hop of some sort.
