Just so you know Jan 24

LibDems Claire Rayner and Clement Freud are now backing Chris Huhne too.

Election day! Jan 23

In Canada. The election campaign has been documented on the Liberal party’s Blackberry Blog. It’s, erm, somewhat tongue in cheek:

Dear Blog Boy: My Mom says all journalists and political staffers are alcoholics.

It’s not true. Some are kleptomaniacs. And one is a tremendous kisser.

Two links for leadership watchers Jan 23

Two stories in the Indie (get them while they’re free!) that may interest those interested in the LibDem leadership.

The first I highlight for a particularly dim quote from Peter Tatchell:

Peter Tatchell, leader of a militant gay rights group, said: “Mark Oaten is not the only Liberal Democrat MP who has had sex with men.”

Not that I wish to delve into MPs’ private lives, but I imagine these include Annette Brooke, Sandra Gidley, Lynne Featherstone, Lorely Burt…

Then there’s another leak story:

Sir Menzies Campbell’s campaign team for the Liberal Democrat leadership has been accused of breaching the Data Protection Act by asking for a membership list of thousands of student supporters.

An email from the chair of Liberal Democrat Youth & Students has been leaked. I don’t know who it was sent to, but my guess would be the LDYS executive. Sounds like a Hughes or a Huhne fan got a bit carried away.

Mark Jan 21

I didn’t want him to be leader, and I was hoping he wouldn’t remain our shadow home secretary once the new leader was elected, but I wouldn’t wish this story about Mark Oaten on anyone.

While there were always rumours about Charles’s drinking, this has taken every LibDem I spoke to this evening completely by surprise. What Mark did or didn’t do – as long as it was legal – is none of our business and if he wants to remain in public life, this shouldn’t be allowed to prevent him from returning to the front benches in future.

In the mean time, I hope the media respect his wishes and leave his family alone while he tries to sort this out.
