I remember Nelson Mandela Feb 02

…thanking Liverpool for the warm welcome while standing in the middle of Leeds.

For some reason it springs to mind when reading this story from The Herald:

Asked about the comments, Sir Menzies, the acting leader, was typically restrained as he skewered his rival. “Anyone who was in Portsmouth on Saturday, when we had a good-tempered and thoughtful debate in front of nearly 400 members, would have realised this is an open contest about which no candidate can be complacent,” he said.

Anyone who was in Portsmouth on Saturday probably missed the debate in Plymouth. Let’s assume the journalist wrote it down wrong.

I remember being on the balcony of the civic hall at this moment and just after nelson had muttered the infamous words a senior leisure services official silently mouthing the words “oh my god” while putting her hands over her face.

I seem to remember a Lib Dem MP (whose name escapes me) rushing down from London to Brighton for a fringe meeting. Only to discover the Conference was in Bournemouth that year.

I also remember when the queen visited leeds civic hall. There was special presentation ceremony in the council chamber. The lord mayor presented her with a golden owl (the leeds symbol) made by a child from a worthy minority. It was inscribed to HRH the Queen. Some of us spotted the mistake instantly but later the council did get a stroppy letter pointing out that we had demoted Her Majesty to Her Royal Highness.
