The Saturday List: My Doctor Who firsts Apr 03

What with the new series starting IN LESS THAN AN HOUR I thought I should write something Doctor Who themed today. Bit stream of consciousness this list:

  • First new TV story I saw: possibly Time and the Rani (I think can remember the giant brain) but if not then certainly something from season 25
  • First novelisation I read: The Daemons
  • First VHS I saw: probably Death to the Daleks (with Pyramids of Mars and Spearhead from Space around the same time)
  • First new TV story I saw as a self-defined fan: Dimensions in Time. Ho hum.
  • First novelisation I read: The Daemons by Barry Letts
  • First New Adventure I read: Nightshade by Mark Gatiss
  • First issue of Doctor Who Magazine I bought: don’t know the number but was probably around 1993 and had Sylvester McCoy in The Greatest Show in the Galaxy on the cover. I bought it from a small newsagent at the edge of the pedestrianised shopping precinct in Tunbridge Wells.
  • First VHS I bought: The Keeper of Traken, at the end of 1992. Also bought in Tunbridge Wells, in the WH Smith in the Victoria centre. What useless things we remember.
  • First convention I went to: Blue Box III in Southampton in 1994.
  • First Doctor who’s younger than me: Matt Smith.

  1. I can’t remember half of these.

The earliest Doctor Who I remember watching was The Invasion of Time, but I also have vague memories of watching the season 11 title sequence with the Doctor shaped hole in it. I think I must have watched all of Tom Baker’s seasons at time of broadcast

First VHS I think was Masque of Mandragora. Both buying and viewing.

First issue of Doctor Who Magazine I read- number 1 bought by my grandma. Then nothing until issue 122, and a big gap until 149.

First Novelisation – no idea but it would have been borrowed from Gorton Library

Fist New Adventure – Bought all from Timewyrm Genesis to Legacy, reading all but The Pit.

    First Convention- Probably Remembrance 93.

First Doctor younger than me: Matt Smith. Although I am nearly as old as Tennant.

  2. The Sea Devils..?
    The Cave Monsters
    Revenge of the Cyberme
    Um… The Five Doctors, probably.
    Still The Cave Monsters
    Timewyrm: Genesys
    No idea. Hardly ever.
Never did, at least at the time / full RRP.
    Leisure Hive, Swindon, 1985.
    David Tennant.

Given that the first story you saw was an appalling one I’m amazed you stuck with Who. 😉

First new TV story I saw: I remember The Green Death. Honest. Not very well, though, and I get bits of it confused with Robot. I vividly remember the end of Planet of the Spiders, for sure.
First novelisation I read: Either The Crusades, or In an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks.
First VHS I saw: Revenge of the Cybermen. I didn’t buy it as it cost about Sixty Squids (old money). It was pants.
First new TV story I saw as a self-defined fan: Probably something Mid-Baker. Hard to pick.
First New Adventure I read: Timewyrm:Genysysys. It was pants.
First issue of Doctor Who Magazine I bought: 1. It was not pants.
First VHS I bought: I have no idea, but it wasn’t Talons of Weng-Chiang, though.
First convention I went to: I’ve never been to one.
First Doctor who’s younger than me: That would be Wee Davie Tennant.
