Sudoku championship Jun 24

Readers of the Independent may notice that pages 32 and 33 are today taken up by a list of names (and who says journalists are lazy?) of those 1,991 people who qualified for the finals of the paper’s national sudoku championship.

I’m amongst them, as, I notice, is Nick. With around two thousand qualifiers and a hundred places in the grand final, there’s a 5% chance (all other things being equal) of making it through.

Any other bloggers in the regional heats?

Unfortunately, though, I can’t make it to the final I’m supposed to be in, as I have to work on Monday. Besides, I never expected to win and just wanted to go along to see how many savants who could do the whole thing in about 10 seconds there were.

Yeah, yeah, you say that now 🙂

As I think we’ve noted before, the winner will be a bespectacled ten-year-old.

I bet you were bespecticled 10 year old. like the chess gut from the x files.

    or perhaps the firestarter

Your figure of 5% of course relies on everyone being of roughly equal ability. I rate your chances at being somewhat higher than 5% 🙂

I was there! (At the Cardiff regional finals). About 30 per cent of my group failed to finish (including someone from Gloucester who told me beforehand that he did the easy ones in his head! In his head? in his dreams!). How did you do?

Hi there! I entered and was in a London heat on June 26th. I think I did OK, I was the first to finish in my heat although my time was good rather than amazing. I haven’t heard anything since though. Has anyone else?…..

I was second in my heat but thought the time was pretty good. Once the first person finished, I went extra fast. I was slowed for about thirty seconds by making a mistake in my third grid though.

I’ve not heard anything. The last heat was on Monday, I think, so finalists should hear soon. I’d hope the Indie print the names of the final 100 as they did the 2,000 regional finalists.
