{"id":397,"date":"2005-09-05T13:28:20","date_gmt":"2005-09-05T12:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.willhowells.org.uk\/blog\/?p=397"},"modified":"2005-09-05T15:33:23","modified_gmt":"2005-09-05T14:33:23","slug":"reds-under-the-bed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.willhowells.org.uk\/blog\/2005\/09\/05\/reds-under-the-bed\/","title":{"rendered":"Reds under the bed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As if my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.willhowells.org.uk\/blog\/2005\/03\/30\/217\/\">distant connections to Tony Benn<\/a> weren&#8217;t incriminating enough, here&#8217;s a relation by marriage sure to get me on to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_McCarthy\">Joe McCarthy<\/a>&#8216;s little list.<\/p>\n<p>John Edward Emile (Von) Holtorp (aka Emile Holtorp, aka <em>Citizen<\/em> Holtorp), is described on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marxists.org\/history\/international\/iwma\/documents\/minutes\/name-index.htm\">Marxists.org<\/a> thus:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Holtorp, Emile \u2014 Polish \u00e9migr\u00e9 in London; member of the General Council of the International (October 1864-66), Corresponding Secretary for Poland (1864-65), delegate to the London Conference of the International (1865); in 1866 joined the International Republican Committee set up by Mazzini.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 1898, my great-great-aunt Emily Baily married George Holtorp. Emile was his father. I feel the need for a chart.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.willhowells.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/pinkos.gif\" width=\"400\" height=\"141\" alt=\"Tree connecting me to Emile Holtorp\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>On the 1871 census, Holtorp describes his occupation as &#8220;Political refugee&#8221;, although on his son&#8217;s marriage certificate he is recorded as a draughtsman. As Corresponding Secretary for Poland of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Working_Mens%27_Association\">International Working Men&#8217;s Association<\/a>, he put his name, with Karl Marx&#8217;s, to such documents as a letter to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marxists.org\/history\/international\/iwma\/documents\/1865\/johnson-letter.htm\">President Johnson<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marxists.org\/history\/international\/iwma\/documents\/1865\/card.htm\">card<\/a> for societies forming part of the Association, and an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marxists.org\/history\/international\/iwma\/documents\/1864\/lincoln-letter.htm\">address to Abraham Lincoln<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As if my distant connections to Tony Benn weren&#8217;t incriminating enough, here&#8217;s a relation by marriage sure to get me on to Joe McCarthy&#8216;s little list.
