Hello from the blogosphere

Filed under: Geeklife — Will @ 11:58 am

I’m currently in Heysel, on the edge of Brussels, where I’ve managed successfully since arriving last night on a smattering on schoolboy French.

Thought I’d blog from the Atomium, where I am right now. It’s based on a molecule of iron and I’m in a giant silver atom now, making it, via a bad pun, literally a blog-o-sphere.

1911 census to be released early

Filed under: Genealogy — Will @ 9:48 am

Great news from the Archives: the 1911 census of England and Wales will get an early release following a ruling by the Information Commissioner in favour of a genealogist who was seeking information under FoI rules.

An online version will go live in 2009, 3 years earlier than planned, with a some sensitive data excised until 2012. A limited £45 per search service will be available until 2009.

Blame for warming pinned on man

Filed under: Geeklife — Will @ 9:32 am

BBC headline: Blame for warming pinned on man. Alas, the article doesn’t continue thus:

On the Thames Barrier

Filed under: Geeklife, Politics — Will @ 2:52 pm

On Tuesday, Ming Campbell and Chris Huhne visited the Thames Barrier, and I did some filming with Ming about the Government’s failure to adequately fund Britain’s flood defences.

The Thames Barrier is an impressive piece of engineering and a marvellous landmark. I have memories of visiting it when I was at school, but this time we were able to go onto one of the barrier stations, which was just as grand close up.

2007 Bloggies - vote now

Filed under: Blogging — Will @ 1:50 pm

The 2007 Bloggies voting phase is now on - voting closes tomorrow, so vote now. The marvellous Peter is up for the lifetime achievement award in a very difficult field - against Slashdot and Wil Wheaton amongst others - and will be getting my vote.

Nominated in the Best-Kept Secret Weblog category is Woof Woofington, a blogging dog. Hmm. I can’t help thinking I’ve seen that template used elsewhere - maybe 8 out of 10 dogs prefer pink.
