Best excuse that I have read about:
I was on a train to Cardiff last year when it halted. The driver announced in a seriously pissed off voice “had to stop for safety reasons. There’s a couple of kids playing on the line and I’m not allowed to hit them”

I was at newcastle station once and they announced that my train was late “due to it moving at reduced speed”. which kind of seemed obvious.
